Information about Aherontas in Thesprotia

The area is full of archaeolosical sites, as its ancient
history dates back to Homer. Aherontas river is referred to
by Homer as the passaseway to Hades (the world of the
dead). In the 4th cent. AC, St Donatos built an important
church in,the area. Also worth visitins  is  the beautiful
Byzantine church of St Kyriaki, built in the  14th cent. AC at
Gardiki.
Gardiki, Glyki, Skandalos, and Hoika are the municipal
departments. They are situated in sreen surroundinss with
lush vegetation alons the rivers Aherontas  and Kokitos. The
village with the most attractions is Glyki.  The crystal clear,
waters of the river Aherontas, its sources and narrows, the
surrounding wooded mountains, the area  where the rivers
flow into the Ionian Sea, and the beautiful sandy beaches,
present an exceptional view of an immensely interesting
ecosystem. Over 450 species of plants are  registered, as
well as a great number of birds and the turtle known as
Caretta caretta. Due to  this the region has been classified
among the Special Nature Conservancy Areas of the -
NATURA 2000 network.
Aherontas is  a unique place which  offers not only
relaxation and calmness but also intense recreation and
sports. For the rafting fans, the river will offer memorable
moments. There is a special area for young and old horse-
riding enthusiasts, and  for those who like extreme sports
(gliding, etc.) is available.
As a result of this year’s floods caused by heavy rainfalls,
the unique Dala bridge suffered very heavy damage. Great
efforts by the Municipality and Prefecture have been made
to restore the old bridge to its previous state.
Visitors can stay at rural lodgings of  the Municipality
(mainly at Glyki), or if  needed at hotels  at  the towns of
Paramythia and Kanallaki (15 km away).
The Municipality of Aherontas can be reached by private
car and bus (KTEL buses) from the towns “of Igoumenitsa,
Ioannina, Preveza, Athens and Thessaloniki.

Information about Thesprotia

Thesprotia Prefecture is the gateway of Greece to the European Union and a critical
strategical junction of cross-European routes. The harbour of Igoumenitsa, the “Egnatia
Odos” Motorway and the new coastal route Sagiada – Igoumenitsa – Preveza – Antirion
forms a new transport and communications reality, creating the conditions for
development, investments and services. Thus the prefecture combines its important
location with a variety of interesting traditional, cultural and environmental elements
which have an appraisal to its visitors. Rock and light, mountains and gorges, rivers and
springs, biotopes and beautiful coastlines, antiquities and churches make an attractive
setting, together with the fine hospitable people. It is one  of the loveliest regions in
Greece. Nowhere else does the blue of the sea embrace so harmoniously the verdant
landscape. It is the  perfect destination for everyone seeking something new  and
different. The beginning of the region’s history is lost  in the depths of time along with
the  first appearance of man in the Palaeolithic  period.  Thesprotia  can boast an
inexhaustible wealth of monuments of cultural heritage:  dozens  of fortified  and
unfortified settlements, military  castles, necropolises and hundreds of sites with
individual ancient  monuments. The first Greek tribes came to Thesprotia  at the
beginning of the 2nd millennium, bringing with them the cult of  Sacred Phegos.
Mycenaean and Cretan merchants arrived at the harbour  of Ephyra carrying  vases,
ornaments, fabrics and weapons. Hermes the Psychopomb flew  over the Aherousian
Lake, and Persephone played on the banks of the Aheron, before Hades shut her up in
his dark kingdom. The League of Thesprotians was founded in Elea and Gitana in the
4th c. BC. The Byzantine Empire was present in Photiki, Osdina and Giromeri. Dark
masses of ruined castles bear witness to the passing of the Ottoman Empire. In the
mountains of Souli and Mourgana villages like eyries built up a culture that was bare
and austere, like the landscape that guarded them. There are many traditional villages
in the prefecture, some of the best preserved in Epiros, with stone-paved streets, stone
houses with imposing vaults, traditional stone fountains and ruined mansions.

Information about Arta

Arta Prefecture is one of Epirus’s four prefectures which occupies the south-eastern part
of Epirus and borders the flmwaMkos (Ambracian) Gulf to the south. It is a place of a great
variety of impressive landscapes: mountains and valleys, fir- and plane-trees, rivers and
waterfalls, orange and lemon groves. The Prefecture’s capital is flrta, the second largest
town in Epirus, known for its famous stone bridge, the largest and oldest in Greece, and for
the numerous Byzantine monuments in and around the town. The Rita. Bridge is on the out-
skirts of the town and spans the River Arahthos. Inside the town stands the large Church of
Panagia Parigoritissa (built in the 13th century), unique in style throughout Greece. Nowa-
days, the church is used as a museum exhibiting finds of various periods.

Information about Preveza

The capital of  Preveza Prefecture is Preveza, a uniquely beautiful town, located in
the southernmost part of Epirus and at the entrance to the Ambracian (Amvrakikos)
Gulf. The town is washed by two seas: east by the waters of the Ambracian Gulf which
constitutes a rare  ecosystem of fauna and flora protected by the international RAMSAR
treaty, and south-west by the Ionian Sea which creates 30 km of clean beaches. Just 7
km from Preveza, there is Ancient Nicopolis, built in the 1st century BC by the Roman
Emperor Augustus. In the archaeological site there is a museum exhibiting the findings
of the excavations, while in the town of Preveza one can visit the museum of the naval
battle of Aktion and the natural history museum. Worth visiting are also the castles of the
town and the churches of the Venetian domination. The tourism infrastucture is good.
There are many hotels in the town centre and rooms for rent along the coast. Preveza
offers its visitors  a large variety of activities: ecotourism, cultural tourism, yachting
holidays, sea sports  (diving,  fishing, water  skiing,  sailing), etc.  For those  visiting
Greece by sea, Preveza provides a marina for the safe anchorage of their yachts or
pleasure crafts either under foreign or Greek flag.
Preveza can easily be reached thanks to good bus links and a charter flight airport.
From Athens there is a daily service by bus and by air (Flight time 65 min.).

Information about Ioannina

Prefecture is one of Epirus’s four prefectures occupying the north and north-
eastern district of Epirus. It is a place endowed with exceptional natural beauties, impres-
sive mountains, dense forests, lakes and rivers, impressive gorges, unique flora and fauna,
chamung traditional villages, vaulted old stone bridges, and, of course, many archaeologi-
cal sites and important Byzantine & post-Byzantine monuments that are evidence of human
activity in the area dating from around the Middle Palaeolithic Age. The history of Ioannina
is related with the Sanctuary of Dodone, the sanctuary centre of North-West Greece which
was erected in the Bronze Age (2600-1100 BC).
The capital of the Prefecture is Ioannina, the largest town in Epirus, built at an altitude of
SOOm and along the west shores of Lake Pamvottda (7.5km long, 5km wide, 3m – 9m deep)
renowned for the  beauty of its natural surroundings. It has a  modem Archaeological
Museum, which exhibits finds from all over Epirus, a Byzantine Museum and a Byzantine
Silverwork Collection (devoted to Ioannina’s long-running silver industry), both housed in
Its-Kale, the south-eastern acropolis of the  Kastro (Castle). In addition, there is a Municipal
Museum housed in the Asian Pasha Tzami (a mosque in the north-eastern acropolis of the
Kastro), which contains exhibits of historical and folklore character, the Municipal flrt-
GaDeiy, and the Museum of Epiiot Popular Art “Kostas Frontzos”.
Ioannina Prefecture’s sights: Nissi Island, the islet in Lake Pamvotida with a complete vil-
lage on it built in the  17th century and some important Byzantine  monuments such as the
Phuanthropinon Monastery with fine frescoes dating to 1530 AD. Perama Cave, (4km north
of Ioannina), a horizontal cave with picturesque small lakes covering an area of 14,800sq.m.
Pavlos VreDis Museum of Greek History in  Bizani (12th km Ioannina-Athens National Road),
exhibiting waxwork figures and scenes of events of the Greek history. Dodone Archaeolog-
ical Site & Ancient Theatre,  21km SW of Ioannina.  Metsovo (58km NE  of Ioannina), an
attractive village at an altitude of 1160m, with the skiing centres of Mount Pindos nearby.
Konitsa (65km N of Ioannina), a town at an altitude of 600m ideal for active, adventure and
sports holidays. The Zagorohoria villages and the VTkos-Aoos National Park, are north out of
Ioannina  in breathtakingly surroundings. 46 charming traditional  villages in  an area  with
dark pine trees, fir trees, green meadows full of flowers, plenty  of streams, picturesque
stone bridges, old mansions, attractive churches, and lush vegetation.  The Vikos-Aoos
National Park, whose purpose is to preserve the rare  flora and fauna of Epirus, includes the
Vikos Gorge, the canyon formed by the Kver 2toos,  and the intermediate area where the
small villages of Mikro (Small) and Megalo (Big) Papingo are located.

Information about Epirus

Epirus, in Greek Ipiios, in the north-west comer of Greece, is mostly mountainous. It
borders Central Greece to the south-east, Macedonia to the north-east, Albania to the north-
west and the Ionian sea and the Amvrakikos Gulf to the south-west.
Due to its alpine nature and the nearness of its western and southern parts to the sea,
the climate of Epirusis continental in the inferior and mild in the coastal areas.
This part of Greece hosts dozens of large and small mountains, chief among them the
Pindus range, The mountains give the impression that they are rising up out of the sea, out of the Ionian. Forests, wild vegetation, lagoons, rivers, wetlands, provide sanctuary to
thousands  of birds. Fabulous beaches and unforgettable  verdant shores bathed in
sunlight are washed by the emerald Ionian. Here in Epirus, life flows as quietly as the
rivers. Here life is filled with the songs of the migratory birds and the whispering of the
leaves. Here the soul is resurrected in some picturesque village, some magical town.
Ioannina is built on the shores of Lake Pamvotida, It is the largest and prettiest city in
Epirus, decorated with old buildings, narrow streets, and natural charms. The area
around the town has other attractions, such as the village of Perama with the famous
cave,  Bizani with the waxwork museum, the island in the lake across from Ioannina.
From  there one climbs up to Metsovo, the beautiful; mountain village known for its
embroidery and its dairy products. Continuing north one comes to the Vikos gorge.
Here,  in amidst incredible mountain scenery are 46 villages known as the Zagorohoria.
In the varied vegetation one encounters picturesque churches, old mansions, bridges,
and traditional settlements.
At an;altitude of 602 metres is the small town of Kbmtsa with the famous gorge formed
by the river Aoos.
A little higher, at 1.100 metres are two of the best preserved traditional settlements,
Sirako and Kalarites.
Dodoni in Epirus was the second oracle of ancient Greece after Delphi. Its temple
was dedicated to Zeus,: The nearby theatre was one of the largest of antiquity. Several
other nuns bear testament to the importance of the site.
The springs of Louros and Zitsa are sources of fine mineral water, flrta is the second
largest town in Epirus and is especially well known for  its fabled bridge and the
Byzantine monuments that remain in and around the town.
The entrance to the Amvrakikos  (Ambracian) Gulf is guarded by Pieveza and its port.
The uniquely beautiful town is close to ancient Nicopolis (1st century BC), Kassope and
Messopotamos.
Parga has plenty of water to irrigate its fertile and verdant land. Finally, Igoumenitsa is
the exit-harbour from Epirus and the entrance-harbour to the Ionian and its islands.

Information about Kastos Island

(Area: 6 sq.km. – Island summit: 155m)
Kastos is a small island SE of Lefkada and between Kalamos and the west coast of
Etoloakamania. It is narrow in shape (length from SW to NE: 8km – width 500m max) and
runs  parallel with the south-east shore of Kalamos Island. Kastos consists of low hills
covered by olive trees, and its west shores are steep in contrast with the east ones that offer
beautiful beaches. In the middle of the east coast and at a picturesque small bay, there is
the harbour village of Kastos with its traditional stone houses and tavemas built along the
harbour, where fishing boats, yachts and small craft may anchor safely. On the west coast
there is also a bay, the Sarakiniko bay, where yachts and small craft may seek refuge from
bad weather.

Information about Paxi

(Area 25 sq km – Coastline: 24 km – I.s. 230 m).
The lovely island of Paxi or Paxos in the blue Ionian Sea, nestling close to the
island of Corfu, is a short distance from the harbours of Igoumenitsa and Preveza.
It is 7 n.m. south of Corfu, 9 n.m. west of Epirus and about 1 n.m. north of the small
island of Antipaxi. Its green landscape with its sandy coves washed by the clear
Ionian Sea is waiting to welcome visitors. The narrow streets of Gaios, the island’s
capital and main port, are living memories of an earlier period.  Each year the
beautiful harbour, 200 metres long, shelters a huge number of yachts. The other
two harbours, Lakka and Longos, as well as the little villages scattered all over the
island, like Magazia. offer the visitor whatever he wants, whether it will be a lively
night-life or peace and tranquillity. The island of Paxi can be  reached from the
ports of Corfu, Igoumenitsa, Parga and Preveza.

Information about Meganissi Island

(Area 20 sq km – Coastline:  46 km – I.s. 284 m).
Meganissi is a picturesque island in the Ionian Sea, 4 nautical miles at the south-
eastern side of the island of Lefkada.
From the group of the Lefkadian islands, Meganissi is the biggest one. According to
historians, Meganissi has been settled since Homer’s time. Meganissi has three
villages  (Vathy, Katomeri, Spanohori), sea caves (Papanikoli Cave,  Giovani Cave),
wonderful beaches and clean waters.
Meganissi can be reached from Nydri, a seaside resort 16 km. south of the town of
Lefkada. There is a regular ferryboat connection (6-7 times daily).

Information about Lefkada Island

Lefkada is one of the Ionian Islands, known as the “Eptanissa” in Greek, which lie in the
Ionian Sea. The island is less than 100 metres from the mainland coast of Akamania,  to
which it is linked by a bridge. The channel of Lefkada is 50 metres wide.  Lefkada is the
fourth largest of the Ionian Islands. The Prefecture of Lefkada consists of Lefkada and the
surrounding  small islands of Meganissi, Kalamos, Kastos, Skorpios, Skorpidi, Madouri,
Sparti, Thileia and Kythros.
The capital of the prefecture is Lefkada Town. The island has a Mediterranean climate, It
has many hours of sunlight daily and is typified by mild winters with increased rainfall and
hot summers with cool breezes. 70% of the island’s terrain is mountainous (i.s. 1167 m).
The western side of Lefkada is precipitous with many long, sandy beaches. It also has
narrow plateaus, fertile valleys and ravines with rich vegetation. Olive trees are spread over
the whole island whilst cypress trees grow here and there, creating a distinct landscape.
The island’s  exceptional flora includes many pine forests and some forests with a special
variety of oak tree. Another variety of tall and thick pine tree which grows on the edge of the
sea is to be found on the island of Kalamos.
Lefkada has plenty of waters, mainly springs but also streams which flow from high
above, creating small waterfalls. In the north of the island is a lagoon which provides an
important  wetland  environment  for many  species  of  birds.The  landscape   is
complimented by the traces of human habitation, old and new.  Agricultural buildings,
such as the dozens of watermills, the olive presses, threshing floors, the simple stone-
built houses and the unique domed stone dens are evidence of the importance of farming
on the island. The salt-pans and fish farms indicate another side  of life on Lefkada. The
churches and the monasteries provided support to the Greek and  Christian culture of the
island during the difficult years of the Turkish rule, providing an artistic escape through
the Byzantine tradition and western influences. The icons and frescos are unique works of
art. The town  of Lefkada itself, with its historic centre, town houses and narrow lanes and
the castle of Aghia Mavra (Santa Maura)  – these  are the unique features which go to
make up the cultural heritage of the island. They tie together the  precious memories of
the past and lead us to the Lefkada of today.
ApoEonion Municipality is in Southern  Lefkada and its seat, VassiliM, is one of the
largest seaside resorts of the island. The Municipality boasts wonderful natural beauties as
well as enchanting beaches with crystal clear waters such as Porto Katsiki, Aghio Filli,
