(Area: 22.5 sq km – Coastline 29 km – Distance from: Ermionida (Kosta) 1.5 n.m.,
Piraeus 52 n.m)
Spetses is the most southernmost island in the Argo-Saronic Gulf with a long
history, playing a decisive role during the Greek War of Independence of 1821.
, The visitor has an opportunity to experience close up the events of those
legendary times through the many notable historical monuments, like the Spetses
Museum, which is housed in the Hatziyannis Mexis (1754-1844) mansion, built in 1798,
and Laskarina Bouboulina’s (1771-1825) special museum in her own 300-year old
mansion.
Traditional elements embellish the settlement of Spetses, like the famous Spetsiot
shipyards, the captains’ mansions, the picturesque post-Byzantine churches, the
squares and little cobbled streets, the horse-drawn carriages, and much more.
Unique pictures of natural beauty are afforded by the striking combination of pine and
sea. The easy land and sea access by different means of transport makes it easy to
visit every corner of the island and gives everyone the chance to enjoy Spetses’
traditional environment. Beaches with yellow sand and sparkling pebbles, in the town
and outside it, in the many bays and coves, await the summer visitors who will revel in
the clean sapphire water.
The largest festival on Spetses, with a religious and national significance, is the
“Armata”. The Spetsiots celebrate the anniversary of the naval battle at Spetses of the
8th of September 1822. The phantasmagoric reenactment of this occasion, which is
accompanied by cultural events throughout the week preceding the Saturday of the
festival, delight the thousands visitors who overrun the island during these days.
Visitors arriving at the port of Dappia will notice the horse-drawn carriages that
add a nostalgic touch to the island as well as the statue of Bouboulina and the old
cannons. To the east of Dappia lies the picturesque Old Harbour of Spetses, where
skilled craftsmen continue the centuries-old tradition of building wooden boats. Each
evening, the Old Harbour turns into the centre of the island’s nightlife with its
numerous bars and discos.
There is a wide choice of seafood restaurants and tavernas on the island and
visitors should try the fish dish “spetsiota”, a local speciality.
Most hotels are located on the north shore of the island and cover all price ranges.
Furnished apartments and rooms in private homes are also available.
Visitors arriving at the port of Dappia can take one of the horse-drawn carriages to
arrive at their accommodation. There are also scheduled boat and bus services
covering all parts of the island. Sea taxis will not only take visitors to the outlying
beaches but also to nearby islands and mainland Peloponnese towns.
Beaches: The most popular bathing spots of Spetses are Aghii Anargyri and Aghia
Paraskevi on the south shore of the island. Aghii Anargyri features an attractive sandy
beach and a romantic sea cave with a hidden entrance. 3 km to the west lies the more
secluded Aghia Paraskevi beach. Closer to the town of Spetses are the beaches of
Zogeria, Xylokeriza, Kounoupitsa and Aghia Marina. Water sports facilities can be
found trhoughout the island.
How to get there: Spetses’ proximity to the opposite coast of Argolida (2 hours
from Athens to Kosta by car) and the frequent sea service(4 hours by ship and 2 by
high-speed boat) make it possible to reach the island rapidly. There is also frequent
boat-taxi service from Kosta to Spetses Town (Dappia).

Information about Poros Island

(Area: 23 sq km – Coastline: 43 km – Distance from Piraeus 31 n.m. – I.s. 358 m).
The green island of Poros, just opposite and very close to the east coast of the
Peloponnese, offers peaceful holidays catering principally for families and also for
sailing enthusiasts. It features pine-clad hills and beautiful sandy beaches, some of
which have water sports facilities. The centre of the island’s social life is the town of
Poros with its picturesque harbour.
Poros, divided from the mainland town of Galatas by a narrow strait (only 200
metres wide at its narrowest point), actually consists of two sister islands, Spheria and
Kalavria, which are connected by a bridge. Spheria, an island created by volcanic
activity, is entirely occupied by the town of Poros. Kalavria, however, is covered by a
dense pine forest.
Poros is a popular sailing destination and from spring to autumn, the beautiful port
becomes the meeting point of luxurious yachts and the centre of a bustling nightlife
where visitors can enjoy the tasty seafood offered in the numerous restaurants and
fashionable nightspots.
The small Archaeological Museum (Tel. 22980 23276) features several interesting
finds from the island and the mainland sites of Troizinia and Methana. Worth a visit are
also the ruins of the naval base created by the Russian Navy in the early 19th century,
that are situated at the end of the road to Neorion.
Some of the sights can be reached by leisurely walks. One hour from the town are
the remains of the Poseidon Temple built in the 6th century BC. Further away is the
16th-century Zoodohos Pighi Monastery alongside a beautiful beach. In addition to
these sights, visitors should also see some points of interest on the mainland across the
strait. Just south of Galatas lies a huge lemontree grove called Lemonodassos. West of
Galatas are the remains of the ancient town of Troizena, whilst some of the most
renowned historic places of the Peloponnese such as Mycenae, Epidaurus and
Nauplia, can be reached within an hour.
The island’s main festival is the Nautical Week held each year in July and during
which the island hosts several concerts, exhibitions and competitions.
There are several resort hotels on the island as well as furnished apartments and
rooms in private homes. Most accommodation is available in Poros Town, Neorion,
Askeli and in the mainland town of Galatas including a campsite.
Buses and taxis leaving from Poros Town service all parts of the island.
Beaches: Neorio is the most popular stretch of the island, consisting of a string of
small romantic beaches. There are several hotels along the seafront together with some
water sports schools. Another lively beach can be found at Askeli, with a selection of
hotels, restaurants and water sports facilities. Less frequented is a small beach at
Monastiri. All these beaches are served by bus from Poros Town.
How to get there: Poros can be reached from Piraeus by high-speed boat (approx 1
hour) or by regular ferry (approx 2 1/2 hours). There are several departures each day
connecting Poros with Piraeus and the other Argo-Saronic Gulf Islands. Motorists can
also use the frequent ferry services from the island’s sister town Galatas located on the
mainland (Peloponnese). In addition, Poros can be reached by bus via Nafplio and
Galatas.

The lordly and pine-dad Poros, is one of the most beautiful islands of the Argo-Saronic Gulf. It offers a harmonious combination of the light
green of its lush vegetation and the bright blue of the crystal clear waters of the Saronic Gulf. Poros, meaning passage, was mamed after the 200-
metre passage which separates the island from the mainland Peloponnese. Poros consists of two islands, Spheria and Kalavria, separated by a
narrow canal and connected by a bridge: the volcanic islet of Spheria entirely occupied by the traditional town of Poros, and the island of
Kalavria completely covered by thick pine forests.
History. Poros has been inhabited since the Mycenaean era (1600 -1100 BC), as has been proved by the finds at several places of the island such
as by an important settlement of the 3rd millennium BC at Cape Vasilis on the north-east coast and a significant naval settlement of the 12th c BC
on the neighbouring islet of Modi (or Liondari) east of Poros.
Poros also played a significant role during the Greek War of Independence of 1821. It was the primary base for the Greek Governor Kapodistrias
and in 1828 the ambassadors of the three allied forces were met to set the borders of the new Greek state. In 1830 the first Greek naval port was
also established here, and nowadays its headquarters building is used as a training centre of the Gteek Navy.
Poros Town, built like an amphitheatre in an appealing place with distinctive colours and atmosphere, has been stated as a preserved traditional
settlement. The first houses were built in 1463, on the top of the hill, around the area where the historic clock tower “Roloi” stands. “Roloi”, built in
1927 and completely restored in 2002, is the symbol of Poros Town.
Visitors may walk along the narrow streets with the white houses, enjoy the sunset from “Roloi” and watch the sea passage with the small boats
coming back and forth from the nearby coast of the Peloponnese all day long.
The island’s premier resorts are Poros Town, Askeli and Neorio. They are the most popular places for holiday accommodation and entertainment.
Whatever is your choice, the short distances within Poros Island will give you the chance to meet the unique charm of every place on the island.
Askeli and Neorio are located on the pine-clad coasts of the island providing modem amenities: hotels, restaurants, bars and well-organized
beaches with a great variety of water sports. Askeli is on the east side and Neorio on the west side of the island.

Places of interest
• Temple of Poseidon (520 BC). Its ruins lie NE of Poros Town, almost in the middle of the island.
• Monastery of Zoodohos Pighi (16th C). An outstanding monument of monastic architecture amid a thick pine forest, east of Askeli.
• Russian Naval Station. It was built in 1834 to supply the Russian ships sailing the Aegean Sea and operated until 1900.
• The rocky islet of Bourtzi, east of Poros Island, with the Heideck fortress, built in 1827 for the protection of Poros’ port.
• “Lemonodassos”. The famous lemon grove, with over 30,000 lemon and orange trees, south of Galatas, a town on the mainland Peloponnese,
just opposite Poros.
• The remains of the ancient town of Troizena, west of Galatas.
• Vayonia, a pebbly beach NE of Poros Town, where an ancient town is to be found under the sea.
• Villa “Galini”, one of the most representative preserved mansions on the island, built in 1892. It hosted world-famous writers such as Henry
Miller in 1939 and Georgios Seferis in 1946.
• Poros Archaeological Museum, displaying important exhibits of the Mycenaean and Roman periods.
• Conference Centre of Poros Municipality, housed in a historic architectural monument built by the architect Ernst Tsiller and restored in 2002.

Beaches
There are lots of beaches around the island: sandy or pebbly, shaded by pine trees, organized or secluded, reached by bus or a small boat.

Activities
All Water Sports (waterskiing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, wakeboarding, etc.) Sailing. Yachting. Rowing (The island’s nautical clubs will teach you
everything you need to know about rowing and kayaking). Walking. Hiking. Mountain Biking.

(Area: 95 sq km – Coastline: 104 km – I.s. 375 m).
Less than a mile from the mainland lies the island of Salamis or Salamina as it is called
today. This is the home of the mythical hero Ajax and also of the great ancient playwright
Euripides. The island became famous through the historic naval battle of 480 BC, when the
Greeks destroyed the fleet of the invading Persians.
Only a few traces of the island’s past can be seen today. Near Jlmbelakia are the remains
of an ancient town and harbour. The remnants of another ancient settlement can be seen in
Kolones near Peristeria. Recently, archaeologists discovered that a cave near Peristeria was
the site where Euripides wrote some of his great theatrical plays 2,500 years ago.
The historic Panaghia Faneromerd Monastery (Tel. 210 4681861) is worth a visit, lying on
the north-western tip of the island, and is famous for its precious frescoes. Another
monastery of historic significance is the Aghios Nikolaos Lemonion (Tel. 210 4662380) on the
road to KanaMa, while the Aghios Dimitrios Church (Tel. 210 4653972) in Salamina Town (the
island’s capital) is renowned for its precious icons and decoration. Visitors to Salamina can
also see the small Archaeological Museum (Tel. 210 4653572) with finds from the island’s
excavations, as well as the Folklore & Historical Museum of Salamina (Tel. 210 4654180)
featuring costumes, artefacts, paintings and other exhibits. Both museums are located in the
island’s capital.
Frequent bus services from the port of Paloukia will bring visitors to all parts of the island
(for information call 210 4671333 or 210 4677278).
Beaches: There are several beaches on Salamina such as Diakti to north-west as well as
Kanakia and Peristeria to the south-west.

Information about Hydra Island

(Area: SO sq km – Coastline: 56 km – Distance from Piraeus 38 n.m. – I.s. 593 m)
Hydra is certainly one of the most unusual places in Greece. This rocky island with no
vegetation and no beaches fascinates visitors from all over the world with its unique town,
a perfectly preserved sample of 18th- and 19th-century architecture. The picture-perfect
harbour and the beautiful stone houses create a romantic atmosphere, which is further
enhanced by the fact that no cars are permitted on the island.
Hydra became a major naval power in the 18th century and played a critical role in the
Greek War of Indepedence in 1821. The wealth of the local shipowners was reflected in
their stately mansions, many of which have been transformed into cosy hotels and inns.
The romantic atmosphere exuded by the old town, has made Hydra a favourite with
painters who come to the island not only to work but also to exhibit their creations in the
Municipal Art Centre and the galleries of the town. This place has also been popular with
the rich and famous since the ’50s, the time it was discovered by film makers as a perfect
shooting location. Hydra soon became one of the most fashionable and cosmopolitan
islands of the Mediterranean with a unique mix of visitors ranging from amateur painters to
movie stars and is still frequented by celebrities who have bought houses in the old town.
Amongst the sights not to be missed in fhe town of Hydra is the island’s richly
decorated cathedral (Mitropoli) with the beautiful marble tower. Worth a visit are the
churches of Ypapanti and Aghios Ioannis as well as the church dedicated to the local
saint Aghios Konstantinos of Hydra with its beautiful wood-carved sculptures. Some of
the old mansions stand out for their architecture such as the houses of Boudouris,
Voulgaris and Tombazis, the latter of which is used as the summer campus of the Athens
School of Arts. Also of interest is the historic Lazaros Kountouriotis mansion, housing a
collection of the National Historical Museum with memorabilia from the Greek War of
Independence in 1821.
The outlying monasteries can be reached either by foot or by donkey. A two-hour walk
up the mountain will take visitors to the monasteries of Profitis Elias and Aghia Efpraxia at
an altitude of 500 metres. A more demanding walking tour leads to Episkopi in the
western part of the island, where the remains of an abandoned Byzantine town can be
seen. This tour includes the beaches of Kamini, Vlyhos and Molos. Visitors can also head
eastwards to reach the Aghia Triada and Zouiva Monasteries.
The island’s role in the Greek War of Independence in 1821 is honoured annually in
late June with the Miaoulia Festival The fireworks, street parties and dance performances
attract many visitors from Greece and abroad, The festival’s highlight is the re-enactment
of a naval battle. Another worthwhile experience is the traditional Easter celebration with
the Epitaph litany on Good Friday and the “Burning of Judas” on Easter Sunday.
Hydra is a popular cruise denstination and a highlight on many yachting itineraries.
The town features numerous shops and boutiques selling handmade jewellery, clothes,
pottery, embroidery and other artefacts. Also on sale are the almond-based sweets called
“amygdalota”, a local speciality.
There is an abundance of restaurants and tavemas offering fish and other traditional
dishes. Those visitors interested in a more active nightlife can opt for one of the
fashionable bars, and there are, of course, the quayside cafes dotting the picturesque
harbour, the ideal spot for people watching.
The main modes of transportation on Hydra are sea taxis and donkeys, as there are no
cars permitted on the island. The sea taxis will take visitors to the outlying beaches but
also to destinations on the mainland Peloponnese and to neighbouring islands.
Beaches: Several rocks near the town have been transformed into bathing platforms,
which become lively meeting spots during the summer. There are also a few small sandy
and pebble beaches to be found in the more remote parts of the island. Closest to town is
Mandraki to the east and Kamini to the west. Both beaches can be reached by a 30-minute
walk along the shores or within a few minutes by sea taxi. Other beaches can be found in
Molos, Bisti, Limnioniza, Vlyhos near Kamini, and Aghios Nikolaos.
How to oet there: There are frequent high-speed boat and ferry services to Piraeus
and the other Argo-Saronic Gulf Islands, making Hydra easily accessible. The trip from
Piraeus by high-speed boat takes approx two hours. Spetses, Poros and several ports of
the Peloponnese are only minutes away. Motorists can also drive to Ermioni, just opposite
Hydra on the coast of the Peloponnese, where they can park before taking the boat to
Hydra.

(Area: 12.5 sq km – Coastline: 17 km – Distance from Piraeus 19 n.m. – Is. 294 m)
The island of Angistri lies approx 4 n.m. south-west of the island of Aegina and
opposite the coast of Epidavros (Peloponnese).
This small island is a celebration of informal holidays. Covered with pine forest, it
features beautiful beaches and several water sports facilities. A bicycle tour is the best
way to explore this tiny holiday destination.
In the north-east comer of the island is the modem resort of Skala that serves as the
island’s port and features a lively sandy beach and many tavemas and shops. Just 2 km
west along the north coast is the island capital, Megalohori, known to locals as Myli,
which has a small yachting marina and is served by boat from Aegina. A short walk
away is the old town of Angistri, built behind a hill as protection against pirates. The
third and most secluded village of Angistri is Limenaria. set in a pine-clad area in the
south-east comer of the island, 4 km south of Megalohori. There are also the hillside
hamlet of Metohi just above Skala and the small seaside settlement SHiri 1.7 km south-
east of Skala. Buses connect all the villages of the island. Additionally, the island is
served by sea taxis, and mopeds or bicycles are available for hire.
The island is especially busy on summer weekends, as it is frequented by Athenians
and is also a popular stop on sailing itineraries. Visitors can stay in small hotels and
furnished aparatments or rent a room in a private home.

Beaches: There are sandy and secluded pebble beaches, which are less crowded
than on Aegina. Along the east shore: Mariza (near Limenaria), Halikada, Skliri and
Skala. On the north coast: Megalohori. Along the west shore: Mikri Dragonera, Megali
Dragonera and the islet of Aponissos.

Information about Aegina Island

(Area: 83 sq km – Coastline: 57 km – Is. 532 m – Distances from Piraeus: Aegina
Town 18 n.m,, Souvala 12 n.m., Aghia Marina 11 n.m.)
The tourist island closest to Athens is Aegina, featuring a wealth of sights, beautiful
beaches, pine-covered hills and peaceful villages, only minutes away from the Greek capital.
The inhabitants of Aegina are especially proud of their island’s past, as they can
boast a rich historical heritage.
Aegina became a major naval power in the 7th and 6th centuries BC when the wealth
gained by the sea trade turned the island into an important cultural centre of its time.
Aegina was also the first place in Greece to introduce money; a silver coin depicting a
turtle was minted on the island in the 7th c BC.
Aegina’s rich past is reflected by its archaeological finds, the most renowned of
which is the majestic Temple of Aphaia (Tel. 22970 32398) built in the 6th c BC. It lies on
a pine-clad hill near the seaside resort of Aghia Marina and offers a panoramic view of
the Saronic Gulf. In Aegina Town are the remains of the 7th-century Temple of Apollo
and the Archaeological Museum (Tel. 22970 22248). More active visitors can climb to
the top of the maountain Ellanion Oros, at an altitude of 532 m the highest peak of the
island, where they can see the ruins of an ancient Temple of Zeus.
Further north lies the medieval ghost town of Paleohora. Today, visitors can stroll
through the deserted houses, churches and the castle. Close by is the imposing Aghios
Nektarios Monastery (Tel. 22970 53806) dedicated to Saint Nektarios who lived on
Aegina until his death in 1920. Also worth a visit is the 13th-century Aghii Theodori
Church in Kypseli and the Panayia Chryssoleonussa Monastery (Tel, 22970 62100) built
in 1600 near Marathonas famous for its unusual architecture.
The Town of Aegina also boasts several sights such as the medieval Markellos
Tower housing exhibitions, the interesting collection of artefacts, costumes and other
exhibits at the Folklore and Historical Museum (Tel. 22970 26401), and the home of the
painter and sculptor Christos Kapralos (1909-1993) in Plakakia Area (further north-west
of the town) with a collection of his works (Tel. 22970 22001).
Visitors arriving at the port of Aegina Town will be greeted by the tiny whitewashed
church of Aghios Nikolaos built in the 17th c and the horse-drawn carriages plying their
trade. A stroll through the narrow streets will lead visitors past the numerous tavemas
and shops along the harbour promenade to the covered fish market. Most shops sell
pistachios, a speciality of Aegina, as well as other agricultural products of the island
such as olives, figs, almonds and grapes. Beautifully decorated pottery is also on offer,
reminding visitors of the island’s rich tradition in pottery making dating back to
antiquity. The medieval village of Messagros is especially renowned for its potters.
Many visitors head to Aghia Marina, the island’s liveliest holiday resort. Its beach is
dotted with numerous fish tavemas, bars and hotels. Other points of interest are the
thermal baths of Souvala suitable for several cures (Tel. 22970-53172, 52193) and the
forest-covered islet of Moni The latter is inhabited by wild mountain goats and
peacocks and has a few beaches. It can be reached in 10 minutes by boat from the
fishing village of Perdika.
Most hotels are located in Aghia Marina, although many can also be found in Aegina
Town, Souvala and along the road connecting Aegina Town with Perdika. Furnished
apartments and rooms in private homes can be rented in all the above locations.
Visitors arriving at the port of Aegina Town can use the local bus network to reach
every part of the island (Tel. 22970-25750, 22787, 22412). The central taxi rank of Aegina
Town can be contacted by calling 22970 22635. For the independent traveller cars,
mopeds and bicycles are also available for hire. For transportation within Aegina Town,
visitors can hire the horse-drawn carriages available for romantic rides.
Beaches: Aegina is dotted with many beaches, some of which offer water sports
facilities. The liveliest sandy beach is located in Aghia Marina. Visitors can also swim at the
Kolona Beach in Aegina Town as well as in Marathonas, Perdika, Souvala, Vagia and Portes.

Information about Argo-Saronic Gulf Islands

In the stretch of sea between the west coast of Attica and the north-east
coast of the Peloponnese lie the Argo-Saronic Gulf Islands: Salamina, Aegina,
Angisrri, Poros, Hydra, Spetses and Dokos.
The closest island of the Argo-Saronic group, Salamina or Salamis, is
virtually a suburb of Piraeus, just over a kilometre offshore to its east, and
almost touches the town of Megara to the west, Aegina lies almost in the
centre of the Saronic Gulf, and Angistriis 4 run. south of Aegina. Poros, Hydra,
Spetses and Dokos, the four southerly islands, of the group, are barely a
stone’s throw from Argblida’s shores.
The short distance between the Argo-Saronic Gulf Islands and the frequent
ferry and hydrofoil services connecting them, allow visitors to combine two or
even more islands during their vacation. The distinctive character of each
island makes such a vacation more diverse and more rewarding for the
holiday-maker.
A weekly vacation could include a stay on two or three islands. For
example, a 3-night stay on Aegina, which leaves enough time to explore the
historic sites of the island, can be combined with a 2-night stay on Poros for a
short beach vacation and a farmers-night stay on Hydra to experience the
island’s unique character. Another possible combination is a 4-night stay at a
beach resort of Spetses or Poros with a 3-night stay in one of Hydra’s
traditional guest-houses.
Visitors to Attica lacking the time to explore the Argo-Saronic Gulf Islands
can sample some of them on an one-day cruise. These cruises stop at Aegina,
Poros and Hydra, allowing passengers to visit some of the sights and
beaches.
The Argo-Saronic Gulf Islands are also preferred destinations on yachting
itineraries.

Information about Thrace

Thrace, in Greek ThraW, occupies the north-eastern comer of Greece. It borders with
Bulgaria to the north and Turkey to the east and has southern shores on the Thracian Sea.
Thrace is today considered a place where the East meets the West in perfect harmony,
as it is the connecting link between Asia and Europe. It is a special place with a very rich
history, and it has been relatively untouched by the tourism explosion.
Neolithic finds, antiquities dating from the Hellenistic era, Roman and Byzantine
monuments, can be found everywhere in Thrace.
To the north it meets the Rodopi mountain range, whose foothills become fertile plains
to the south.
The climate ranges from continental to Mediterranean with lots of rain and snow. Vast
plains, such as those of Xanthi and Komotini, fertile valleys, such as the Evros valley, great
rivers, rich vegetation, and forests with many trees mark the region.

The lakes and wetlands of Thrace are among the most important in Europe with
perhaps more than three hundred protected species of birds. More than 200,000 wild
waterbirds spend their winters here. The flora has drawn the attention of ecologists.
Entering Thrace from Kavala, the visitor encounters scenic Xanthi, the capital of the
prefecture (district) of Xanfhi. It is built on the location of Ancient Xantheia and is justly
proud of the many well-preserved old houses and mansions which are prime examples of
local architecture. A Byzantine castle dominates its surroundings from the top of a nearby
hill to the north of town. Picturesque monasteries lurk among the pine-wooded hills. Porto
Lagos, an attractive fishing village is nearby, as are Avdira, Messimvria, and Maronia.
Further to the north-east, is scenic Komotini, capital of the prefecture of RodopL The
forts of the area, which date from pre-Christian times to the Byzantine era, are of special
interest. Finds from all of the archaeological sites in Thrace are displayed in the Komotini
Museum.
iilexandroupolis the capital of the prefecture of Evros, is a seaside town known for its
fine sandy beaches. A pretty town with well laid-out streets and neoclassical buildings. To
the north-east of Alexandroupolis is Feres with its especially important Byzantine
cathedral of “Theotokos tis Kosmosotiras”. Along the Greek-Turkish border, to the north,
is Soufli famous for its silk production and its silks, and even further north are Didymotiho
and Orestiada. The first is a splendid Byzantine city and the second is a small town built in
a fertile area. Other Evros’ attractions are the protected area of the Dadia Forest and the
wetlands ecosystem of the Evros Delta (see “Ecotourism” section of this guidebook).
Roads pass through planted fields, flanked by wooded mountains and the deep blue
sea. Other roads pass through cities, villages, and landscapes possessing a rare Greek
beauty. The same roads lead the visitor through nature, history, and tradition to the
easternmost point of Greece, wonderful Thrace.
Opposite Thrace’s seaboard, to the south-west of Alexandroupolis, is the island of
Samothrace that boasts abundant natural beauty, lush vegetation, running waters, virgin
shores, important antiquities, and charming villages .

Information about Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, the capital of Thessaloniki Prefecture, is Greece’s second largest city and
one of the oldest in Europe. The “Queen of the North”, the “Bride of the Thermaic”, the “city
that never sleeps”. An ideal year-round city travel destination for successful City Breaks.
Thessaloniki is designated UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the number and
value of the Byzantine churches and monuments. Neoclassical buildings with decorated
facades and standing side by side with modem dwellings, make the walk through the city
an interesting journey through time.
Thessaloniki is one of Greece’s most dynamic cities to visit. Home to the “Philoxenia
International Tourism Exhibition”, the “Thessaloniki International Book Fair”, and an annual
International Trade Fair every September, it provides a commercial and business cross-
road for the Balkans and the Mediterranean. Home also to the “Thessaloniki International
Film Festival”, the “Thessaloniki Jazz Festival” and “Summer Nostalgia” (the open-air screen-
ings of classic moovies), the city boasts a flourishing cultural life: cinemas, theatres, concert
halls, galleries and arts halls.
Enjoy the great lifestyle that Thessaloniki has to offer, with all your senses. Stroll along
the waterfront and set your eyes on the city’s symbol, the “Lefkos Pyrgos” (White Tower).
